We humans possess 5 senses.
- Vision
- Touch
- Hearing
- Taste
- Smell
Of the 5 senses, vision is the most mechanically complex - and processes more information than any other. Vision provides our brain with spatial information - the ability to determine an objects location relative to our own and to determine how it relates to us. By this, we mean how near or far it is, if it is moving and, if so, how fast and in what direction. Our eyes, along with the visual cortex of the brain, process light waves and integrate them into learned shapes - so not only are we spatially oriented… but can also determine characteristics such as shape, size, and color.
Simply speaking, your eye is like a camera. It has lens and a focal mechanism that accepts light (cornea, iris, lens, pupil). The light is focused on the retina (the "film") - where the sensations are converted to electronic impulses that are then picked up by the optic nerve and carried to the visual cortex in the back of your brain. If you have a digital camera, think of the retina as the CCD and the optic nerve as the circuitry that carries the bit pattern (the image) to your camera processor (visual cortex) and memory.
Got the picture?
Take a look at this simple eye diagram to help visualize how your vision works.

Of course, the big picture is much more complex than that. There are dozens of parts to the eye and many ways that things can begin to go wrong. Like your automobile, your eyes needs regular check-ups and maintenance care.
